Jung Kook first became a global superstar as one of the seven members of the K-pop boy band BTS. After many years in the group, he broke out on his own–without leaving the troupe–and became a chart-topper in his own right. With his solo career still going strong, even as he’s on a hiatus to enlist in his country’s military, he breaks out of a tie with the septet with one of his own smashes.
On this week’s edition of the Adult Pop Airplay chart, Jung Kook holds on and makes history. The singer has now lived on the tally for the past 18 frames with his single “Too Much,” a collaboration with The Kid Laroi and Central Cee, and this week was very important to the tune’s legacy.
Now that it’s spent 18 weeks on the Adult Pop Airplay chart, “Too Much” stands as the fourth-longest-charting hit of all time on the ranking of the top-performing tunes on adult pop radio stations across the country by any South Korean musician. Last week, Jung Kook was tied with BTS for this honor, as both his hit “Too Much” and the band’s “Butter” had spent 17 turns on the tally. Now, Jung Kook has passed that track for good.
“Too Much” currently sits behind three tracks that are all tied for first place on this all-time ranking. Two tunes by BTS–their own “Dynamite” and their Coldplay collaboration “My Universe”–as well as Fifty Fifty’s “Cupid” all racked up 20 stays on the Adult Pop Airplay chart.
There’s still a chance that Jung Kook could catch up to BTS and Fifty Fifty, but the likelihood of that happening seems pretty slim at this point. “Too Much” is down to No. 40 on this week’s Adult Pop Airplay chart, falling from No. 39. It has nowhere left to go before disappearing from the ranking, and it looks like that fate might be in its near future.
Even if “Too Much” vanishes in a matter of days, it will still hold this record among South Korean stars, at least for the time being. The single is one of two tracks from Jung Kook to make it to the Adult Pop Airplay tally, and it ranks as his longest-running. His previous single, “Seven,” only lived on the list for 13 frames.
While “Seven” didn’t spend as many weeks on the Adult Pop Airplay chart as “Too Much,” it was the bigger hit between the two in other ways. “Seven,” a duet with rapper Latto, peaked at No. 19, while his collaboration with Laroi and Cee only climbed to No. 22.
