On August 7, 2024 (KST), Korean news outlet JTBC aired CCTV footage of what they claimed to be BTS Suga’s drunk driving incident.
The following week, on August 14, 2024 (KST), another Korean news outlet, DongA Ilbo, revealed that the footage released by JTBC was incorrect.
They revealed the real footage of Suga’s drunk driving incident and claimed that JTBC’s was of another person.
JTBC quickly removed their original video footage from YouTube and replaced it with the new footage released by DongA Ilbo.
Despite the update and correction, JTBC’s silent deletion of the previous video and lack of public correction sparked anger from netizens. They’re now demanding JTBC apologize for their error in reporting.
“Doesn’t JTBC have to apologize for its false CCTV on Suga’s DUI? I’m not even a fan of BTS, but the CCTV was said to be false… It’s true that he did wrong by drunk driving, but JTBC ought to apologize for their wrong report too.”
“Why did you report another person riding their scooter as if it was Suga? Are you insane?”
“You made mistakes on Kang Hyung Wook‘s power trip, Suga’s CCTV footage, and even on G-DRAGON, too. What are you doing? How will the public believe you at this point? You shouldn’t be just turning the video private, but apologizing too.”
“Apologize for your wrong report. This is so embarrassing as a true media outlet. How can you publish false information when the world turns based on reading the news? Even if you happen to provide false information, you need to promptly apologize and correct it. That’s such basic common sense and knowledge. Apologize.”
“Apologize for spreading false information.”
DongA Ilbo’s claim that the original footage was false also contained additional information about Suga’s drunk driving incident.
