Fans Pray For BTS V’s Safe Return After CELINE Cancels Menswear Show Amidst Paris Riots

Recently, CELINE‘s creative director, Hedi Slimane, announced that the brand’s show on July 2 in Paris has been canceled. BTS member V was supposed to be in attendance at this event.

V departed from South Korea on June 30 and arrived in Paris to attend the CELINE Homme Summer 24 show. But fans weren’t sure of his schedule until the singer started posting about the show and Paris on his Instagram story. Since then, some French ARMYs expressed their concern over his presence in the city at this moment, given that multiple French cities have been experiencing riots for days.

Paris is currently at the epicenter of nationwide chaos. On June 27, Nahel, a 17-year-old with Algerian-Moroccan heritage, was shot by a police officer during a traffic stop in the Paris suburb of Nanterre. The teenager’s death was caught on video, and soon it fueled the already-exiting public sentiment against police violence and racism, especially in the poor and racially mixed urban communities. Though the police officer who shot the boy is currently facing a formal investigation for voluntary homicide and has been placed in preliminary detention, people are protesting against the systematic racism and inequality in French law enforcement agencies.

For five nights in a row, multiple cities in France are witnessing violent protests over this issue. According to reports, rioters have torched around 2,000 vehicles and ransacked shops. So far, over 100 people have reportedly been arrested by the police.

Amidst this unstable situation, Hedi Slimane took to his Instagram and announced that the CELINE menswear show has been called off. He wrote that proceeding with the fashion show would be “inconsiderate and totally misplaced,” adding that though it was a “great disappointment,” the step is also necessary to ensure the safety of his team and the guests.

Having to abruptly cancel a show that represents a considerable amount of work for the fashion house, my teams and the workshops is a great disappointment. It’s also a disappointment for all our guests, journalists, artists and musicians, to whom I extend my warmest and most affectionate thanks.

Their safety is naturally a priority for us, and the uncertain evolution of these extremely serious disorders requires us all to exercise the utmost discernment.

From my point of view alone, a fashion show in Paris at a time when France and its capital are bereaved and bruised seems inconsiderate and totally out of place.

Fans are pleased with Slimane for his sensible reaction to the situation while also hoping for the safety of V, along with all the other guests and the show’s crew.
